Scotch Whiskey Glasses

Originally named for the drink most commonly mixed in it, an Old Fashioned (a cocktail featuring a sugar cube muddled with 2 dashes of bitters and some soda water and topped with a measure of either bourbon, scotch, or whiskey poured over ice and garnished with a orange slice, lemon twist, and maraschino cherry), the Scotch-Whiskey glass, commonly known as a Rocks glass today comes in a variety of sizes and styles.

With a usual Scotch-Whiskey glass holding between 6 and 10 fluid ounces, and a double holding between 12 and 16 fluid ounces, it’s a great glass to have in your home bar as it allows you to drink anything from scotch on the rocks to highballs (a liquor and a mixer, typically some type of soda) all within the same glass, saving you space in your cupboards.
Available in glass or crystal (for those seeking something a bit more upscale), a Scotch-Whiskey glass doesn’t truly have a defined shape.  Though typically a squat glass with a flat bottom, new styles can include those with rounded bottoms that sit at an angle to hold just enough drink, or glasses with flared lips or expanded bowls, all of which can come with etching on the sides to enhance the plain glass or crystal.

The perfect glass for scotch, bourbon, or whiskey – both on the rocks and neat (meaning without ice or mixer) – it’s possible that only the martini glass is more iconic when it comes to drinking liquor, with its place in noir films both past and present as the glass of choice for the liquor of choice for the hard drinking anti-heroes that made those movies famous.
